About the Role:  Lifeguards at WKCAC enjoy flexible hours, good pay, and a rewarding job that serves the community. They are responsible for the supervision and safety of pool users and spectators by educating and promoting habits and attitudes that lead to safe recreation, and for enforcing safety rules and responding to emergencies in an appropriate manner. This position requires the ability to deal courteously and appropriately with the public in a variety of situations. Individuals must be able to work both independently and as part of an overall staff team.

How to Apply:
 If you are motivated to become a lifeguard, we have scheduled training sessions in September.

  1. Complete an online job application.
  2. After you apply you will be invited to schedule a swim test.
  3.  Individuals who pass the swim evaluation (see details below) will be invited to an interview. 
  4. Those who successfully pass the swim test and interview will receive a contingent offer of employment and will complete a pre-employment background screening.
  5. Upon successful passage of the pre-employment process, you will be provided the training schedule to select a PAID lifeguard training course that works for you.

Training:

  • Lifeguard training courses will take place in-person. Classes are held at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
  • The training commitment is up to 40 hours. 
  • All in-person training is paid time for new hires. 
  • Most Lifeguard training courses are scheduled for seven consecutive days Monday - Sunday. Weekdays 3:30pm-8:30pm and weekends 9:00am-7:00pm.
  • Access to course materials (lifeguarding manuals and CPR masks) are provided at no cost to course participants.

Lifeguard training courses include the following certifications:

  • Lifeguarding (Including Deep Water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid (r.24)
  • American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogens Training (r.21) 
  • Northwest Lifeguard Preparation Course

Job Duties

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Actively monitor the activities of WKCAC pool users and patrons. Educate the public and enforce the rules and regulations of the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center. Ensure that safety hazards are corrected and report all unsafe conditions to appropriate parties.

  • Respond to all emergencies by:

  • Rescuing persons in distress or in danger of drowning.

  • Administering first-aid care in the event of an injury.

  • Providing CPR/AED and resuscitative care.

  • Ensuring activation of the EMS system.

  • Addressing all injuries and emergency situations by providing appropriate care within your level of training as a certified lifeguard while adhering to OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens training and safety standards.

  • Teach swimming techniques and water safety (swimming lessons).  

  • Report all incidents of damages or injuries using the appropriate forms. Complete reports accurately and in a timely manner. 

  • Assist in cleaning and maintaining the pool and related facilities and collect lost and found items.

  • Assist in staging the facility for various swim sessions and large-scale events.

  • Provide excellent customer service to all patrons and staff.

  • Attend all scheduled staff trainings.

Qualifications You Bring

  • Knowledge of lifeguarding techniques and principles including knowledge of first aid and CPR/AED 
  • Communication and customer service skills (verbal and written)
  • Knowledge of swimming lesson techniques and methods or interest in learning
  • Ability to adhere to OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens training and Safety Standards
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations

Physical Requirements: 

  • Physical requirements: 
  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to hear and respond to two-way radio calls in a busy aquatic center environment.
  • Maintain a minimum of 20/40 vision. Use of corrective lenses is acceptable. 
  • Ability to perform duties involving physical labor such as bending, kneeling, standing, reaching, climbing, stooping, squatting, pushing, and twisting. 
  • Ability to perform strenuous activity. 

Workplace Exposures: 

  • Noise (cheering crowds, loud pumps/filtration equipment) 
  • Chemically treated pool water 
  • Cleaning/janitorial supplies (see Safety Data Sheets)

Required Licenses/Certifications

  • American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid (r.24)
  • American Red Cross Bloodborne Pathogens Training (r.21)
  • Northwest Lifeguard Preparation Course
  • All certifications must be acquired within 3 months of hire.

*Before all certifications are attained, new hires will be assigned non-lifeguarding tasks such as cleaning/maintenance, swimming instructor aide, etc. Once initial certification is obtained, it is the responsibility of the employee to maintain required certifications to remain employed.

Working Conditions:

Work LocationWeyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center, located at 650 SW Campus Dr, Federal Way WA 98023.

Work Schedule: The work schedule for this position is flexible and can be varied and event dependent. It may require weekends and late evening work as well as split shifts.] This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible. 

Union Representation: This position is not represented by a union.

Pre-employment Swim Evaluation:  Applicants to this paid training opportunity must successfully pass both a verbal interview AND a preliminary swim test to be considered for hire. The preliminary swim test includes the following:

1.  Complete a swim-tread-swim sequence without stopping to rest including:

  • Jump into deep water and fully submerge, resurface then swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted; swim goggles are allowed.
  • Maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs.
  • Swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both.

2. Complete a timed event within 1:40:

  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. Your face may be in or out of the water.  Swim goggles are not allowed.
  • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first to a depth of 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
  • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on your back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object while keeping your face at or near the surface so you are able to breathe. You should not swim the distance under water. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
