Overview

The Principal Analyst contributes to REI’s success by leading implementation of advanced analytics that aid in providing knowledge of customer behavior and transactions across retail properties to inform strategy, answer business questions, and drive growth and profitability for the division. This position will be responsible for functional and thought leadership for analytics including planning, design, execution, visualizations and insights. Additionally, this position will provide a deep and foundational level of understanding of customer interactions within the Stores organization, including cross-divisional impacts, culminating in concise and influential communication of findings to senior leaders.


Responsibilities and Qualifications

  • Partners closely with leaders within the Stores organization and cross-divisional partners to understand analytics and testing needs and provides broad thought leadership across multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Requires advanced knowledge of the principles, theories, and best practices within analytics. Is knowledgeable with general business practices and procedures.
  • Stays current on emerging market trends and methods of analysis.
  • Provides actionable recommendations to identify, drive and influence key business strategies and plans affecting new and existing site and app features and functionality.
  • Influences beyond the Stores organization as a key contributor to broader Co-op strategies and the coordination of inter-department data governance and prioritization.
  • Produces full analysis of data including a clear problem statement, hypothesis, evidence of the hypothesis, results and clear recommendations.
  • Uses a broad range of existing customer data to identify and evaluate opportunities for building customer understanding, targeting and site optimization; work with cross-functional partners to develop additional data sources
  • Advocates for user adoption of analytics and data driven testing, prioritization and sound test design and education both within and outside of retail.
  • Identifies and determine likely reasons for anomalies; support data and testing governance efforts. Contributes to site documentation and governance.
  • Contributes to an ongoing stream of analysis/hypothesis based ideas for testing.  Work with cross divisional partners to develop a programmatic testing approach.
  • Leads in developing new optimization and testing and/or analytics approaches and recommendations for new or enhanced technical tools.
  • Mentors less experienced members of the team. May manage teams and participate in the development of budgets for group.
  • Has the ability to work on ambiguous projects; operates using independent judgement with little oversight on even complex projects.
  • Is assigned long-range projects and reviewed through achievement of objectives according to pre-defined goals.
  • Tasks are generally strategic in nature.
  • Learns news skills quickly and independently; becomes subject matter expert of data outside of the teams’ normal realm of data. Opens up new doors of data to support key decision making across all levels of the organization.
Required Skills & Experience

    7+ years of experience with data analysis software, data query, and data visualization/ communication. 3+ years of experience of extraction and manipulation (e.g. SQL) of both structured and unstructured data 1-3 years with visualization programs (Tableau preferred)3+ years of experience using statistical analysis and other modeling techniques (e.g. SAS, SPSS, R).BA/BS Degree in a quantitative field, business or marketing-related major or equivalent experienceMust be able to prioritize which efforts will generate the most return, and to direct the organization accordingly. Must be able to work toward collective goals while still respecting the contributions of the individual. Builds capacity of individuals and teams through effective employee development, involvement, communication, and supervision efforts.Creates a strong, mutually supportive work spirit and culture where people can do their best.Establishes trust and inspires others.Makes effective organization and people decisions in a manner consistent with REI's values and ethics.Delivers on commitments and holds others accountable to expectations.Collaborates with leadership team and advocates solutions in the overall Company's best interest.Uses business knowledge, innovative thinking, and sound judgment in the solution of problems or the pursuit of business opportunities.Consolidates information from various sources including feedback from others to reach sound decisions.Considers the ultimate impact of decisions and actions on internal and external customers.
