WHAT WE CAN ACHIEVE TOGETHER

The Virgin Islands Program Director provides strategic leadership for the Virgin Islands Program of the Caribbean Division of The Natures Conservancy by overseeing the development and execution of TNC's 2030 Goals and Shared Conservation Agenda for priorities within the geography, which includes the U.S. Virgin Islands and British Virgin Islands. The position location is on St. Croix, US Virgin Islands.

The key areas of focus of the Virgin Island Program Director are:

  • Cultivate and build local relationships with key public and private conservation stakeholders.
  • Oversee implementation and timely completion of project and grant deliverables for activities of TNC's Coral Innovation Hub.
  • Manage the Division's lands portfolio and related divestment strategies.
  • Serve as primary program outreach contact with the general public, government agencies, and supporters.
  • Support fundraising and marketing for the Program, in collaboration with those functional teams.
  • Serves on and collaborates with the Caribbean Leadership Team in support of division-wide management and implementation of strategic plans and initiatives

The Program Director functions as manager and conservation strategist, accountable for the program's success in implementing TNC's conservation approach, producing measurable conservation results, and maintaining organizational values. Their primary focus will be on the U.S. Virgin Islands (approximately 90% of their time). They ensure outcomes are achieved in priority areas that fall within the operating unit's responsibilities, and contribute intellectual, financial, and/or human resources to the formulation and execution of priority cross-boundary efforts. They support alignment of activities by securing, coordinating, and configuring resources, capacity, and programs to address the most critical organization-wide projects, threats, and strategies. Utilizing their knowledge and experience of the Virgin Islands' natural systems, culture, and societal dynamics, they ensure that strategies and activities of the Program reflect the geography's strategic approach and priorities as applicable to that area and are ultimately responsible and accountable for the programs, partnerships and conservation results in the Virgin Islands. They are responsible for collaborating with others on the procurement and application of resources to address the conservation priorities established by TNC, both in the Virgin Islands and in areas beyond their span of authority. They demonstrate an affinity for working in a matrixed organization, building collaborations with other leaders across the Caribbean Division and beyond. They serve as the primary local spokesperson for TNC to internal and external audiences (including staff, volunteers, the Board of Trustees, public and private donors, government agencies and officials, community leaders and other partners) and cultivates those audiences to support and promote TNC's mission and vision.

The Director is also responsible for evaluating the Division's land portfolio to set priorities and make recommendations on the future ownership and management of such lands. Based on this evaluation, they will lead efforts to adjust the land portfolio strategy and carry out asset transfer transaction as part of an overall asset portfolio management strategy. For lands compliance, the Director supervises and works closely with the USVI Land Steward to ensure that issues are addressed, accurate records are kept, and monitoring is conducted. They negotiate complex and innovative solutions with government agencies and landowners to conserve and protect natural communities and develop and implement conservation strategies.

The Director supports fundraising and marketing for the Program, including setting priorities for private and public fundraising goals. They support the Philanthropy team and the Policy & Strategic Programs team in the cultivation and direct solicitation of donors (private, bilateral, and multilateral government) to meet fundraising goals, and oversee public fundraising efforts specific to the USVI.

The Director reports to the Deputy Director of the Caribbean Division.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION

The starting pay range for a candidate selected for this position is generally within the range of $108,000-$116,000 annual base salary. Where a successful candidate's actual pay will fall within this range will be based on a variety of factors, including qualifications, specific skills, and experience.

Only applicants who are currently eligible to work in the United States will be considered. Unfortunately, The Nature Conservancy is unable to provide support for a work permit for this position.

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with TNC's Auto Safety Program.
