As a Taxonomist, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of online commerce, ensuring seamless product discovery and user experiences. Your expertise will directly impact millions of users, optimizing how they navigate and interact with a vast marketplace of products.

As a Taxonomist, you will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and iterating on a unified taxonomy for all products within the marketplace. You will leverage your expertise to build categories and custom collections that power features like recommendations, similar items, and merchandising themes. Collaborating closely with product and engineering teams, you will ensure the taxonomy supports business goals and enhances user experiences.

Responsibilities:

• Oversee AI and machine learning model output to ensure content quality across various user experiences.
• Analyze model outputs and provide recommendations for improvement.
• Maintain and design the product taxonomy through extensive competitive research.
• Adhere to industry best practices for taxonomy development and maintenance.
• Partner with stakeholders to launch new commerce experiences utilizing the taxonomy, including navigation, filters, and recommendations.
• Consult with internal partners to expand the taxonomy while maintaining its underlying structure.
• Build out categories and custom collections to power features like recommendations and similar items.
• Manage and iterate on product attributes that drive ranking models, structured content, and faceted search.
• Advise on taxonomy management and product strategies.
• Translate conceptual ideas into valuable product experiences.

Must-Have Qualifications:

• Experience evaluating and implementing taxonomies for systems like search, content management, or product classification.
• Experience with taxonomy management tools and platforms.
• Familiarity with data science and machine learning concepts (classification, training data, model evaluation).
• Proficiency in Excel and Google Sheets.

Nice-to-Have Qualifications:

• E-commerce experience.
• Scripting language proficiency (Python or SQL).
• Experience analyzing large datasets with SQL or other query languages.
• Experience with labeling, QA testing and analysis, familiarity with taxonomy management software

The target hiring compensation range for this role is $50.85 to $56.50 an hour. Compensation is based on several factors including, but not limited to education, relevant work experience, relevant certifications, and location.
