A tack welder joins together structural fillet joints as specified by blueprints, work orders, or oral instructions through the use of weld equipment and tools.
Key Responsibilities & Functional Knowledge
This list is representative of the key areas of responsibility and functional knowledge required of a tack welder in the Weld shop. A tack welder must demonstrate an introductory knowledge of the skills, functional knowledge and abilities required to perform tasks in these and related areas of responsibility.
Introductory knowledge means that the tack welder has a basic understanding in how to perform tasks in these categories (including, but not limited to, the specific tasks identified below) and is able to complete them with some assistance. This also means that the tack welder has the necessary level of knowledge of the equipment, protective gear, and machinery required to complete these tasks. In most cases, as specified, the tack welder is expected to assist, rather than completing the task independently.
Welding & Installation
- Satisfactory fillet weld break test in accordance with S9074-AQ-GIB-010/248 (Current Revision)
- Satisfactory completion of workmanship training
- Examine work pieces for discontinuities and defects by measuring work with inspection gauges (fillet weld gauges, V-wac, scale, etc.) to ensure conformance with specifications
Practical Theory Requirements
A tack welder must demonstrate an introductory understanding of various structural fillet welds and how to operate and maintain the machines that fabricate and repair metal structures, equipment, and machinery. Must be able to obtain the following welding certification: SMAW carbon steel fillet weld break test.
Other Requirements
- Must be able to read, write and comprehend simple instructions
- Must be able to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions in written, oral or diagram form
- Must be able to understand units of measure, to include fractions
- Must be able to measure using a scale and weld inspection gauges
- Must be able to wear safety PPE and use personal hand tools (adjustable wrenches, wire cutters, slag hammer, wire brush, etc.)
- Must have knowledge of preheat and interpass temperature control measures.

Pay Information
This position is covered under a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which will determine your wages.
