Full Job Description

The purpose of this position is to supervise the Corrosion Control functions and Corrosion technicians for all the company’s pipeline and facility infrastructure within the assigned area of operation.  Through subordinates, contractors, and other departmental personnel, this position will ensure that the company’s Procedures, Engineering Standards, and best practices meet all applicable code and regulatory requirements. 

JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Corrosion Supervisor Position is accountable for, but not limited to the following:

Business Execution

  • Directs the work of Corrosion Technicians and contractors to ensure safe and efficient work execution. 
  • Ensures compliance survey data (i.e., annual test points, isolated services, casings, bonds, foreign crossings, rectifiers, atmospheric inspections, etc.) is performed and properly documented according to all applicable codes, standards, and procedures.
  • Troubleshooting of Corrosion Control related components (i.e., low systems, rectifiers, interference areas, shorted conditions, etc.) is performed, documented, and tracked in a timely fashion. 
  • Corrosion Control remediation projects and work orders (i.e., install anodes, clear short, install insulator, repair / replace test station) are generated, documented, and tracked in a timely fashion. 
  • Review of Corrosion Control Design for new construction or other special projects (Casings, Bridge Inspections, AC Mitigation, etc.)
  • Maintenance and update of corrosion control mapping systems (GIS) in a timely fashion.
  • All Corrosion Control data records are accurately entered into the appropriate system of record in a timely manner.
  • Designs/Reviews new cathodic protection (CP) systems for new and existing assets. 
  • Submission of necessary budget items.
  • Evaluates performance and cost of contractors through frequent meetings, QA evaluations, and cost/benefit analysis to ensure quality and performance meets departmental expectations.
  • Supervises corrosion control work in area within budgetary constraints, providing timely, thorough, and accurate variance explanations as necessary.
  • Timely PO issuance and payment for corrosion related activities (electricity for rectifiers, remote monitoring, projects, outside work, etc.)
  • Verification of OQ, safety, and training compliance for staff and applicable contractors
  • Provides field technical assistance and direction in complex corrosion data analysis obtained through close interval surveys, direct current voltage gradient surveys, annual test point surveys or other corrosion related field activities.
  • Provides adequate support for inspections and audits by outside regulatory agencies for assigned area.
  • Coordinates company personnel involved in inspections and conducts inter-company inspections on a routine basis to ensure compliance with company OPM.
  • Seeks out information sources and reviews available information to identify additional reads / surveys to be performed (i.e. foreign line crossings, casings, etc.)

Communication

  • Monthly Reporting of Business Analytics (Project Status, Financial Variance Reporting, Current Issues).
  • Weekly Reporting as required.
  • Presentations during periodic meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Provides guidance and recommendations for implementation of mitigative measures and associated budgeting.
  • Engagement with other stakeholders as necessary.

Relationships and Networking

  • Provide relevant support and engagement for both internal and external customers (e.g. TIMP, DIMP, PMs, GIS, Procurement, Engineering, Operations, Contractors, etc.) to allow efficient operations and effective results.
  • Responsible for collaborating, creating awareness, and building effective relationships with various internal and external stakeholder groups for department.
  • Selection and qualification of third-party service providers in the areas of corrosion services including survey, cathodic protection systems, bridge inspection, AC mitigation, etc.
  • Support other departments for project prioritization (replacement, engineering / construction projects, accelerated actions, preventative measures, etc.)
  • Maintains contact with personnel throughout all service areas and reviews/monitors activities and operations to ensure that all company and governmental code requirements have been met.

Innovation

  • Evaluation and recommendation of new equipment/technology and corresponding processes/procedures that could potentially be incorporated in existing facilities.
  • Keeps abreast of technical advances that may be valuable considering increased efficiencies, manpower needs and environmental regulations.
  • Identification of computer application improvements required and coordination with IT as necessary to implement.
  • Tests and Pilots application upgrades.
  • Trends and analyzes corrosion control data.
  • Ensures team is implementing new technologies/process improvements as directed.

Development of Others

  • Helps Establish goals and objectives for the department to ensure compliance activities are met and to drive continual improvement.
  • Assists in the planning and coordination of appropriate meetings throughout the year.
  • Verifies OQ, safety, and training compliance for staff and applicable contractors.
  • Coaching and developing employees within span of control.
  • Providing opportunities for individuals to develop additional skills outside of normal responsibilities.
  • Prioritize and plan training opportunities for the department.     

Qualifications

Education, Certifications/Licenses:

Required: 

  • NACE CP2 (Cathodic Protection Technician)
  • Associate’s Degree in Electrical, Electronics, or equivalent electrical training

OR

  • NACE CP1 (Cathodic Protection Tester)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or other Technical Discipline

OR

  • 15+ years experience in cathodic protection and corrosion control within the Company (applies to internal candidates only)

Preferred:

  • NACE CP3 (Cathodic Protection Technologist)
  • BS Electrical Engineering or other Engineering Discipline

Related Work Experience:

Required:

  • 7 – 10 years corrosion control experience 
  • 5 – 7 years pipeline experience

Preferred:

  • 2-3 years supervisory experience.

Specific Skills & Knowledge:

Required:

  • MS Office Suite – intermediate proficiency
  • Attention to detail.
  • Organizational Skills - Intermediate
  • Ability to read, interpret, and implement codes, standards, and procedures.
  • Ability to identify process improvements and work with others to develop appropriate processes and procedures.
  • Direct and develop direct reports.
  • Planning and Management of Multiyear budgets..

Preferred:

  • Pipeline Compliance System (PCS) proficiency
  • Maximo and Oracle Proficiency
  • Geographic Information System (GIS) proficiency

Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: 

Travel: 

  • Occasional (5 – 20 percent)

Physical Demands: 

  • This This position occasionally requires prolonged standing or walking.
  • This position occasionally requires the incumbent to reach above shoulder level.
  • This position occasionally requires the incumbent to bend, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
  • This position requires the ability to lift up to 25 pounds.

  • The incumbent works in an office environment.
  • The incumbent may work near or with moving mechanical parts.
  • The incumbent may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, or chemicals.
  • The incumbent may be exposed to varying outdoor weather conditions.
  • The incumbent may be exposed to excessive noise.
