Summary

The Operations Section of the Solid Waste Division, within the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks, is seeking candidates for two (2) Supervisor I positions. This exciting opportunity allows you to engage in environmental sustainability efforts, contribute to the transformation of our transfer station business model, and become a part of a supportive, hands-on management team known for innovative thinking, relentless problem-solving, and strong partnerships.

These are Term Limited Temporary (TLT) positions, each with a duration of up to 12 months. Current eligible King County employees may also apply for these roles as a Special Duty Assignment.

About the Role:

As a Supervisor I, you will engage in:

  • Transfer Station Operations: Overseeing the efficient transfer of solid waste from commercial haulers and King County residents to landfill sites.
  • Waste Diversion: Assisting staff in educating customers about cost-effective recycling at designated stations, collaborating with recycling vendors, and diverting materials away from landfills.
  • Material Recovery of Reusable Resources: Supporting staff in sorting recyclable materials from waste to recover reusable resources.
  • Additional Impactful Projects: Collaborating with various internal and external partners, promoting Equity and Social Justice across all work aspects, contributing to site design, equipment procurement, and spearheading positive environmental initiatives.

About the Team:

Our management team is supportive and hands-on, known for innovative thinking, relentless problem-solving, and cohesive partnerships. There may also be opportunities to backfill the Operations Supervisor III position, which can provide a pathway to other leadership roles.

The Operations Section of the Solid Waste Division manages eight transfer stations, two drop boxes, and a 920-acre landfill. Job Duties

What You Will Be Doing: 

  • Responsible for assisting Supervisor II in planning, scheduling, and supervising the work unit
  • Work collaboratively with human resources and payroll staff to resolve employee issues.
  • Evaluate current work processes and assist in developing, recommending, and implementing more efficient/effective work processes.
  • Ensure that proper safety precautions are followed on all jobs; implement and supervise workgroup safety activities; ensure that appropriate corrective actions are taken to resolve safety issues.
  • Ensure that day-to-day management of the assigned unit is consistent with terms of applicable collective bargaining agreements and applied fairly to all covered employees.
  • Respond to inquiries from the general public and internal partners and vendors, providing information and resolution of issues when required.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Qualifications You Bring:    

  • Experienced leader with a team oriented and positive attitude.
  • Experience working with Human Resources, payroll and staffing/scheduling work groups.              
  • Customer relations skills for both internal and external; dealing tactfully and courteously with the public.
  • Skill in conflict management.
  • Basic computer skills using Excel, Outlook and Word.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience applying supervisory principles and practices, including work planning and performance management. Experience can be as a supervisor, crew chief, lead, foreman, or other equivalent work experience.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience identifying and monitoring occupational hazards and applying safety precautions.
  • Minimum of one  (1) year of experience in the solid waste and recycling industry
  • Valid WA driver's license.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:

Work Location: Cedar Hills Regional Landfill, 16645 228th Ave SE, Maple Valley, WA. However, the Solid Waste Division currently operates eight (8) transfer stations located throughout King County and the candidate must be available to work at any of the eight locations as assigned including Vashon Island. Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is exempt from the overtime provision of the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA) and is not overtime eligible. The schedule may vary depending on business needs with shifts 4/10 and/or 5/8, 2nd shift (2:00 pm to 10:00 pm) and may include weekends. You must be willing to work any of these schedules. All Operations Managers and Supervisors are expected to participate in an after-hours support rotation. Rotations are two weeks in duration and the number of rotations per year are approximately two to three times per calendar year.

Union Representation: This classification is represented by Professional and Technical Employees, Local 17 Supervisors.

Physical Requirement: The candidate must be able to work in an office environment in addition to working in an active landfill operation, transfer station operation which may include working work on uneven grades, slopes, surfaces, and terrain in inclement weather and other adverse conditions such as dust, odor, high volume noise and heavy traffic.
