As an AI Engineer Intern, you will be an integral member of a team developing AI/ML solutions from concept to implementation. You will tackle meaningful business problems and execute substantive tasks within complex systems under the mentorship of experienced engineers. With a solid foundation in AI concepts and computational techniques, you will contribute significantly to system design, modeling, and coding. You will actively engage with cross-functional teams in both ideation and implementation phases of AI products. This internship provides comprehensive exposure to developing and deploying ML algorithms with a focus on building production-ready AI systems that drive business value.

Premera’s Summer Internship Program is June 16th – August 15th, 2025.

To be eligible for this position, you must be enrolled in either a Master's or PhD program.

This is a hybrid internship program on our campus in Mountlake Terrace, WA.

What you'll do:

  • Develop components of larger AI systems and frameworks for AI applications and products under guidance.

  • Participate actively in the ideation and implementation of prototypes and minimum viable AI/ML products.

  • Implement tools and components for cloud-based AI systems, focusing on integration with existing architecture.

  • Contribute to data pipelines that underlie complex AI systems, with a focus on data transformation and management.

  • Implement low latency APIs within a microservices architecture for powering AI models and services.

  • Participate in the monitoring of deployed models and contribute to reporting processes that ensure optimal model performance.

  • Actively participate in a team that exercises principled, agile-like development practices.

  • Create and maintain thorough documentation that is consistent with team procedures, corporate policies, and expectations.

  • Follow peer review procedures for all assigned work and provide feedback on others' work when appropriate.

  • Keep abreast of new tools and concepts through reading documentation or literature and actively practicing skills development.

What you'll bring:

  • Currently pursuing a Master’s/PhD degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.

  • Academic or project experience with AI/ML systems; industry internships in software development, data science, or related fields preferred.

  • Practical experience developing machine learning models with frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, or Keras.

  • Applied understanding of prompt engineering techniques including Zero-shot and Few-shot prompting, with familiarity with tools like LangChain or similar frameworks for generating and refining prompts.

  • Basic familiarity with version control and DevOps practices.

  • Proficiency in developing and optimizing ML solutions using Python and libraries such as NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib and scikit-learn.

  • Understanding of traditional ML lifecycles and experience applying them in projects.

  • Familiarity with ethical AI practices including explainable AI, fairness, and mitigation of bias/hallucinations.

  • Solid communication and collaboration skills.

The pay for this role will vary based on a range of factors including, but not limited to, a candidate’s geographic location, market conditions, and specific skills and experience.

The salary range for this role is posted below; we generally target up to and around the midpoint of the range.

National Plus Salary Range:

$43,200.00 - $90,000.00

*National Plus salary range is used in higher cost of labor markets including Western Washington and Alaska.
