Join TNC Virginia as a STEP (Short-Term Experience Program) Intern!
The goal of STEP is to create pathways for people seeking to gain experience with a conservation focused organization. We currently offer paid internships in a range of disciplines across our Virginia Teams. With a focus on recruiting and developing a diverse staff, we strive to create an environment where people of all backgrounds, experiences, and identities feel welcomed to participate in conservation.
All STEP interns will receive an orientation, professional development webinars, and chances to visit TNC sites. Along the way, interns will have the opportunity to broaden their experiences through interactions with Nature Conservancy staff and partners
WE'RE LOOKING FOR YOU
TNC's VA Stewardship Team is looking for an intern to assist with non-native invasive plant data collection. The intern will be working in the field to find plots of invasive plants and documenting them in Field Maps. The body of information collected throughout this internship will greatly enhance TNC's understanding of the current ecological state of our fee lands. This position may require work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances. Interns will dedicate 5% of their time to professional development activities through STEP.
Primary responsibilities include:
* Hiking solo or in a small team to find and document plots of invasive plants.
* Using GIS applications to research property boundaries and plan routes to ensure that project parameters and deadlines will be achieved.
* Maintaining all equipment provided by TNC throughout the internship term.
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
* High School diploma or equivalent, and six months related experience
* Education or other training with Field Maps, AGOL, and other ESRI applications.
* Willingness to learn to identify common native and non-native plants found in Virginia.
* Willingness to work in physically demanding environments such as mountainous, forested terrain - often without a trail or in inclement weather.
* A mission-oriented work ethic, this job will not be completed in a single Summer - we need someone who can see the larger goal and remain focused on completing each step.

ADDITIONAL JOB INFORMATION
Schedule: 35 hours/week for 10 weeks from May 28 - August 8, 2025
Orientation: All interns are required to attend a two-day orientation in Charlottesville on May 28-29, 2025
Pay: $17.50/hour
Location: Charlottesville, VA
