ABOUT THE POSITION

Under supervision Wildfire Defensible Space Inspectors perform a wide variety of fire prevention duties. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience working for one of the finest fire departments in the state. Wildfire Defensible Space Inspectors are temporary positions for staffing for 3-6 months during the spring and summer months. Wildfire Defensible Space Inspectors focus on community outreach through increasing awareness, distributing information, and by providing guidance to individuals and communities on actions that can be implemented to reduce human loss and property damage from wildfires. Examples of work tasks may include one or more of the following:

  • Provides home hardening, defensible space fire prevention and fire hazard reduction information to the public, department personnel, and other agencies.
  • Recommends when an abatement notice on a property should be served and notifies property owner(s) or occupant(s). 
  • Explains Marin County's abatement program regulations, costs and procedures to property owners.
  • Utilizes electronic devices to input and collect data.
  • Collects, enters, maintains, and disseminates data pertaining to fire prevention; reconciles reports, files, and records.
  • Composes letters and reports based on field notes.

Shifts are 10 hours a day, 4 days per week, with potential of being held on duty if the need arises.

ABOUT YOU

Our Highly Qualified Candidate: will be able to work effectively in small teams or independently for extended periods of time. They will also be able to read and interpret complex technical documents such as maps, diagrams, and textbooks; as well as perform basic mathematical calculations. We are looking for people who have sound judgment and have the ability to communicate effectively with others. They will need to be able to follow both verbal and written instructions, engage effectively with the public, and work harmoniously with our team.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: 

  • Principles and practices of home hardening and/or defensible space. 
  • Equipment and methods used in the abatement of exterior vegetative fire hazards.
  • Basic safety procedures when operating a vehicle, hand or power tools, or other procedure related to the work.
  • Arithmetic, including decimals and fractions.
  • Basic record keeping methods.

    Ability to:

    • Read, interpret, explain and enforce regulations and technical documents such as maps, diagrams, and textbooks. 
    • Use initiative and independent judgement within established procedural guidelines.
    • Drive safely and skillfully.
    • Use various computer systems, programs, and apps.
    • Operate motor vehicles, tools, mechanical equipment and machinery.
    • Understand and follow verbal and written instructions. 
    • Communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in written form. 
    • Deal tactfully and effectively with the public, sometimes in challenging, stressful situations.
    • Perform basic mathematical calculations.
    • Work and live harmoniously with co-workers.

      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

      • In accordance with State legal requirements, applicant must be at least 18 years old by the time of hire.
      • High school graduation (or equivalent GED). 

      Certificates & Licenses

      A current valid California Driver's Class C (Basic) License.

Testing and Eligible List: Depending on the number of qualified applications received, the examination may consist of a highly qualified review, application screening, online assessment, written examination, oral examination, performance examination, or any combination to determine which candidates' names will be placed on the eligible list.  The eligible list established from this recruitment may be used to fill the current vacancy, and any future vacancies which may occur while the list remains active.

Interviews are tentatively scheduled for the week of March 18, 2025.

 Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
