ABOUT THE POSITION

As a Fire Dispatcher Assistant, you will be working to support the Marin County Fire Department by helping with dispatching resources by radio and telephone. You will also be performing both emergency and non-emergency incident support work. This is a great entry-level opportunity for those who want to gain the skills and abilities necessary to be able to dispatch public safety personnel and equipment effectively while working in a supportive team environment. 

This is a temporary position for staffing during the peak wildland fire season, expected to conclude at the end of fire season (late Fall 2025). The typical work schedule consists of 10-12 hour shifts, but candidates must be willing to work a 24-hour shift if needed and/or be willing to be called back and work overtime in emergency situations.

ABOUT YOU

Our Highly Qualified Candidate: We are looking for Fire Dispatcher Assistant professionals with a passion for working together as a team and serving the community. Ideal candidates will be able to react with sound judgment when under stress and in emergency situations while doing several tasks simultaneously. They will be able to listen and clarify incoming calls to extract pertinent information, communicate effectively, and write detailed reports. They will be able to coordinate the staffing of our seasonal Firefighters using a staffing program, and have daily interactions with MCFD personnel to ensure adequate staffing is maintained. Additionally, they will be able to read, write, alphabetize, follow written and oral instructions, and conduct simple record keeping. Knowledge of the highways, main streets, major buildings, and geography of Marin County is a plus. Experience in emergency services or completion of an accredited dispatch training program are also highly desirable.


QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of: 

  • The highways, main streets, major buildings and geography of Marin County
  • Simple record keeping

Ability to:

  • Read, write and alphabetize; follow written and oral instructions; retain oral information
  • Communicate effectively in English both verbally and in written form
  • Maintain situational awareness
  • Learn the operation of two-way radio and telephone communications equipment
  • Learn to dispatch public safety equipment in an effective manner
  • Deal tactfully with the public
  • Work well in conjunction with other cooperating agencies to accurately process incidents in a timely manner
  • React with sound judgment under stress and emergency situations while doing several tasks simultaneously
  • Listen and clarify incoming calls to extract pertinent information
  • Write detailed reports
  • Read and interpret maps
  • Work and live harmoniously with co-workers

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 

Equivalent to graduation from high school. Experience in emergency services is highly desirable. Completion of an accredited dispatch training program is highly desirable.
