About the Team:
King County Parks and Recreation Division is a steward of one of the nation's most expansive and diverse park systems, encompassing over 250 parks, more than 185 miles of regional trails, over 215 miles of backcountry trails, and more than 32,000 acres of open space.
Located within the Director's Office, the Parks Safety Program ensures safe, healthy, and equitable working conditions for all Parks staff. The program focuses on clear, practical policies, engaging field-based training, proactive risk reduction, and continuous feedback and improvement. Job Duties
What You'll Be Doing:
Safety Training & Development
- Coordinate, schedule, and deliver safety training for all Parks staff, ensuring equitable access across roles, shifts, and locations.
- Collaborate with internal trainers, vendors, and subject matter experts to develop relevant, effective safety education.
- Ensure consistent onboarding safety training for new employees, addressing previous gaps and providing field-based training for remote teams.
Field Safety Audits & Staff Engagement
- Conduct regular site visits to assess safety conditions, identify risks, and support staff with coaching, hazard mitigation, and safety resources.
- Develop task hazard assessments (THAs) to ensure employees understand safety expectations before performing high-risk tasks.
- Maintain consistent safety standards across all teams and work environments.
Policy Implementation & Safety Communication
- Assist in rolling out new safety policies and procedures, ensuring they are clear, accessible, and applicable to all employees.
- Develop user-friendly guides, job aids, and toolkits in partnership with the Parks Safety Manager.
- Follow up with staff and supervisors to confirm practical application and understanding of safety policies.
Incident Response & Compliance Support
- Support investigations of incidents and near-misses, gathering information to identify root causes.
- Track and report incidents and trends and recommend proactive solutions to prevent future occurrences.
- Provide guidance on incident reporting processes, fostering a culture where all staff feel safe and supported reporting concerns.
Proactive Risk Mitigation & Continuous Improvement
- Identify and implement preventative safety measures and job-specific protocols for unique hazards in various park environments.
- Engage frontline staff and supervisors to gather feedback and tailor safety programs to real-world conditions.
- Promote an inclusive, equity-centered approach to safety, ensuring all employees-especially those in high-risk roles-have a voice in safety program development.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills
Qualifications You Bring: - Working Knowledge of occupational health and safety principles, best practices, and regulatory standards (e.g., OSHA/WISHA).
- Hands- on experience supporting operational safety programs, conducting safety audits, risk assessments, field inspections in high-hazard or operationally complex field environments.
- Experience with assisting in developing and delivering training programs that engage diverse teams, ensuring accessibility and comprehension across different learning styles.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills to effectively engage with frontline staff, supervisors, and leadership.
- Strong observational and problem-solving skills to identify safety concerns or patterns in dynamic field settings and recommend effective, compliant solutions.
- Flexibility and adaptability to work in a variety of settings, including office environments, field locations, and remote sites
- Demonstrated commitment to fostering an equitable and inclusive workplace safety culture, ensuring that all employees have access to safety resources, training, and support regardless of their role or work location.
- Experience using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and working with databases or digital tools to track safety incidents, training records and audits.

Required Licenses:
Valid Washington State Driver's License
It Would Be Great if You Also Bring:
- Occupational Safety Certifications (Such as OSHA 30, Certified Safety Professional, Construction Health and Safety Technician, Certified Safety and Health Official) or other relevant safety credentials.
- Experience in public sector safety programs, particularly in parks, recreation, or natural resource settings.
- Knowledge of adult learning principles and experience designing training programs for diverse staff groups.
- Experience conducting accident investigations and developing incident prevention strategies.
- Bilingual skills or experience working with multilingual teams to enhance accessibility in safety training and communication.
Supplemental Information
Working Conditions:
- Remote and Onsite Work Details: Employees in this role will work a hybrid work schedule, with onsite reporting requirements typically 2-4 times a week. The frequency of onsite work is determined by business needs and may be adjusted accordingly. Onsite reporting locations may be at various King County worksites including the Central Maintenance Facility at Renton (3005 NE 4th Ave, Renton, WA 98056) and the collaboration space at King Street Center (201 S. Jackson St, Seattle, WA 98104). This work arrangement promotes work-life-balance and reduces carbon footprint under the department's vision of Green Where We Work.
- Work Location Requirement: Employees must reside in Washington State and be within a reasonable distance to King County worksites to meet onsite reporting requirements.
- Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, Standard hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. The role requires flexibility in work hours, including the ability to adjust schedules or work overtime to accommodate operational needs, special events or emergency response. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
- Union Representation: This position is represented by PROTEC 17 Union.
- Duration: This recruitment aims to fill a Term-Limited Temporary (TLT) position with an anticipated duration of 2 years. If the position is filled by a King County employee who has successfully completed their initial probation, they will be offered the role as a Special Duty Assignment (SDA).
- Physical Requirement:
- Ability to walk, hike, or stand for extended periods across varied and sometimes uneven terrain, including gravel, dirt, steep slopes, or wet conditions.
- Ability to work in a range of outdoor environments and weather conditions (rain, heat, cold) as part of regular field visits and audits.
- Ability to lift, carry, and transport safety materials or equipment weighing up to 40 pounds (e.g., cones, first aid kits, training gear, signage).
- Comfortable working in both indoor and outdoor settings, sometimes with limited access to shelter or amenities.
- Ability to drive between sites, access remote park areas, and occasionally respond to unplanned safety needs in the field.
