The Production Manager position reports to the Director, Theatre Operations and will manage the Performing Arts production staff and produce various content for Emerson Productions for internal purposes and external clients. This position will also train and teach Production Management students and support the Design Tech students to ensure the safe and successful execution of Emerson Stage productions. This is an important role that requires excellent organizational and management skills, as well as the ability to guide and train students and staff.ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
- Mentor and guide production and stage management students in all areas of production as needed.
- Supervise the staff in the Performing Arts production shops, including those in the scenic, costume, paint, and props areas, and work closely with them and students to fully realize all productions.
- Collaborate with the Design and Tech faculty to oversee, monitor, and evaluate the design process of all shows.
- Work with student designers, professional designers, student technical directors, and/or technical directors to creatively solve all technical and financial challenges.
- Facilitate all Emerson Stage production equipment rentals and purchases for lighting, sound, projection, and automation packages, liaising as necessary with the Purchasing and Accounts Payable departments.
- Collaborate with the Technical Director to ensure the safe construction and installation of scenery and additional technical elements of the productions.
- Maintain and develop positive working relationships with vendors and providers of outside services.
- Monitor the department budget and track all production-related expenses.
- Oversee hiring of full-time and temporary production staff in the shops and crew for shows as required.
- Produce video content for clients as required.
- Advise on the EVVY Awards as needed.
- Complete all necessary administrative work.
- Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS – Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to perform the job effectively.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Theatre, Theatre Arts, Video Production, or related discipline required
- 5-10 years of professional production experience required, including exposure to scenic, costume, paint, props, lighting, sound, and projection functions
- Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES – This may be representative but not all-inclusive of the knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly associated with the job.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting technical drawings in AutoCAD, Vectorworks, and similar applications
- Understanding of structural engineering and the ability to ensure the safety of production constructions and installments
- Understanding of lighting and sound technologies
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to create and maintain budgets and track expenses
- Ability to supervise professional and student staff
- Self-starter with excellent interpersonal communication and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in high-stress situations with varied personalities
- Ability to maintain flexibility in changing circumstances

This position requires an in-person presence on the Boston Campus during the work week.
