Summary




King County Parks is excited to announce we are seeking a Parks Archaeologist (Project/Program Manager I) to join the Operations Team! In this role, you will have a unique opportunity to apply your archaeology expertise to preserve cultural resources while also supporting staff engagement, cross-team collaboration, and operational efficiency. Your contributions will play a vital part in protecting the County's cultural heritage and improving the overall workplace experience for Parks employees.


About the Role:

The Parks Archaeologist will play a key role in helping Parks Operations comply with cultural resources laws and regulations while supporting the day-to-day activities of the team. This position will report to and assist the Parks Operations' Cultural Resources Coordinator (Parks Project/Program Manager III) in implementing the Cultural Resources Program by conducting fieldwork and managing digital records. Additionally, the role will enhance program effectiveness through collaboration with Parks staff, partners, volunteers, and other work groups.

This position performs work remotely and onsite.


About the Team:

The Operations Team includes approximately 180 full-time staff and over 100 temporary employees, supporting a diverse range of services that offer meaningful experiences for team members at all levels. The Parks Archaeologist plays an integral role in supporting staff across the team, helping them successfully advance their project work.


This highly collaborative position reflects the King County's True North values and aligns with Parks' mission to steward both natural and cultural resources. In fulfilling this mission, Parks works closely with King County's Historic Preservation Program (HPP), which has established clear procedures for evaluating potential impacts to both above- and below-ground cultural resources. The Parks Archaeologist will rely on these procedures to ensure responsible and effective stewardship of the County's valuable assets.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Implement Historic Preservation Program (HPP) recommendations for Parks-funded and permitted projects.
  • Conduct fieldwork including cultural resource pedestrian and shovel probe surveys, site inventory documentation, data collection, and construction monitoring, and responding to inadvertent discoveries.
  • Review work orders, assist with report preparation, and  support project planning.
  • Facilitate utility locates and tribal notifications ahead of fieldwork.
  • Utilize Geographic Information System (GIS) data layers to manage cultural resources data, and for project planning/coordination.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Qualifications You Bring

  • Bachelor's Degree in archaeology, anthropology, or closely related field and archaeology field school, or equivalent intensive archaeology field training experience.
  • Good working knowledge of Geographic Information System (GIS) development and implementation (programs include: ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI))
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and familiar with other useful programs and websites to conduct research, organize files, prepare reports, and manage data.

Physical Requirements: 

In conducting regular archaeological fieldwork, the Parks Archaeologist must have the ability to:   

  • Walk over uneven/rough terrain and through wetland areas.
  • Hike long distances.
  • Use a shovel to dig holes.
  • Lift/carrying equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Work alone when and where it is safe to do so.

Required Licenses/Certifications:  Valid Washington State Driver's License or ability to obtain within 15 days of hire.

It Would Be Great if You Also Bring:

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to work with people having diverse opinions and viewpoints.
  • Ability to oversee archaeological technicians, interns, and tribal staff coordination in the field when needed.
  • Ability to complete solo fieldwork with oversight by the Cultural Resources Coordinator.
  • Strong written and oral communication, and presentation skills. 
  • Ability to help coordinate the work of partners, volunteers, staff, and outside work groups.

Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:

  • Work Location: This position will work in the field throughout King County. The homebase will be the Central Maintenance Facility in Renton. The Parks Archeologist may also work remotely from time to time on certain projects. 
  • Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. The regular schedule is Monday - Thursday, 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM.This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
  • Union Representation: This position is represented by PROTEC17
