Job Summary

Basic Function and Responsibility:
Provides professional nursing leadership and administrative direction with and through nursing supervisors for the practice of Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and others involved in clinical patient services in the Ambulatory Care unit(s). Participates as a member of a leadership team in Ambulatory Care Services (ACS) and in planning and coordinating care delivery for ACS patients. Provides and continually improves health care services, education and research in support of the mission and goals of the Health System. Ensures that processes meet or exceed regulatory and professional standards. Supervises the quality of nursing and clinical assistive staff services provided to patients in Ambulatory Care Services within the Primary Care Segment. Maximizes patient and staff satisfaction within human systems and material resources. 

Organizational Relationships:  Supervision Received: Administratively responsible to the Associate Chief Nursing Officer (ACNO), Ambulatory Care Services and Ambulatory Care segment. Collaborates with the Ambulatory Care Clinical Chiefs (ACCC) and Clinical Administrators in the Ambulatory Care unit(s) for operation of the unit. Works collaboratively with ACS administrators, medical director leads, and administrative managers. Supports the alignment of UMSN with ACS processes, practices for education of students, faculty practice, and research, as appropriate.

Supervision Exercised: Responsible for the management and nursing leadership functions of nursing services for Ambulatory Care Services. Responsible for clinical competence for regular and temporary employees and Licensed Practical Nurses, and the professional practice of all levels of Registered Nurses. Collaborates with medical leads, administrators, and operations managers in the administrative and functional supervision of nursing and clinical assistive staff.

Responsibilities*

  • Directs the recruitment, interviewing and selection of all levels of nurses, staff in Patient and Family Support Services, and clinical assistive personnel. Works collaboratively with leadership teams in the hiring process.
  • Oversees and is accountable for staffing and scheduling of nursing and clinical assistive staff. Assists Medical Director and/or medical leads, Administrator and/or unit managers in determining adequate complements of staff, scope of staff roles and appropriate workload. Manages or facilitates relief staffing for the Ambulatory Care Services units.
  • Oversees and provides supervision, counsel, discipline, and performance evaluation of nursing supervisors, nursing and clinical assistive staff, with feedback from administrators, medical staff and operations managers.
  • Oversees the professional development of nurses and the development and training in clinical skills of all nursing and clinical assistive staff.
  • Provides leadership for the development, implementation and evaluation of standards of nursing practice and for interdisciplinary clinical guidelines, using best evidence.
  • Collaborates with nursing management of satellite sites who provide care to cancer patients, ensuring that orientation and competency plans are shared, and assistance provided as appropriate.
  • In collaboration with other members of the ACU leadership team, identify and plan for staffing consistent with the needs of the patient population and budgetary requirements, and appropriate to the scopes of a variety of roles. 
  • Participates in and coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of multi-disciplinary patient care activities and programs. 
  • Works collaboratively with medical directors and leads, and administrative and operations managers, to identify and resolve unit operational problems and process improvements.
  • Provides leadership, assists and advises with the Medical Director, Administrator, medical leads and operations managers in satisfying other regulatory standards.
  • Represents nursing services in inter-unit planning and problem-solving regarding patient care. 
  • Plans, coordinates and evaluates LEAN initiatives and other quality improvement activities. 
  • Interprets and implements Hospital and University policies and procedures. 
  • Facilitates the education of health sciences students. 
  • Evaluates and manages clinical equipment and recommend necessary expenditures. 
  • Assures compliance with affirmative action, regulatory, legal, patient care and safety programs.

Required Qualifications*

  • Current licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in Michigan. 
  • Required Educational Requirement: 
    • Master's degree in Nursing or Health Care Administration, Public Health, Business or related field (a Juris Doctor degree may be considered) 
    • If Master's degree is not in Nursing, a Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required 
  • Four (4) or more years of progressively responsible ambulatory care nursing experience.
  • Three (3) or more years of demonstrated competence and leadership in an ambulatory care management role are necessary.
  • Nurse Leadership certification or completion of a nursing leadership certification within one (1) year of accepting this position or when eligible to certify, whichever comes first.  Certification is expected to be maintained while in this leadership role. Examples include Certified Nurse Manager and Leader (CNML) or, Nurse Executive (NE-BC).  The nursing leadership certification must be recognized by the Magnet Recognition Program and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), for the list, visit here.

Desired Qualifications*

  • Previous experience (greater than 2 years in the last 5 years) with adult and pediatric primary care patient population.  
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary leadership team.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, self-confidence and assertiveness in a variety of contexts.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.  
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate expectations, to lead by actions as well as words, to build consensus and to share credit for success.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead diverse, multi-disciplinary groups.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical and problem-solving skills, knowledge of basic accounting principles and budgetary practices.
  • Strong ambulatory experience.
  • Demonstrated understanding of regulatory/safety in a clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated understanding of regulatory requirements for procedural sedation.
  • Creativity and a high level of energy.
  • Experience providing leadership for advanced practice nurses.
  • Broad human resources, financial, and program management experience. 
  • Proficiency with the system applications used in University of Michigan Health (UMH) Michigan Medicine, such as MiChart, OneStaff, and Wolverine Access.
  • Experience in LEAN techniques, operations improvement, marketing, and/or strategic planning. 
  • Knowledge of UMH policies and procedures.

Work Schedule

Hours: 40 hours per week
Specific hours and days to be determined upon hire.

Background Screening
