Our higher education client is hiring a Lead Data Visualization Designer to join their team, full-time. This role is hybrid 3 days/week in their Scottsdale office.
This role requires skills in creative design, expertise in data, storytelling, business intelligence tools, and a strategic leadership mindset.
What you will be doing:
- Work with a division of the university focused on the design and scalable delivery of digital teaching and learning models to increase student success and reduce barriers to achievement in higher education
- Responsible for transforming complex data sets into compelling, insightful, and aesthetically pleasing visualizations
- Working closely with data experts inside and outside of the department, unit leaders, and other
stakeholders - Gather and interpret business requirements, translating them into visual stories that drive decision-making and strategic insights.

- Creates beautiful and visually stunning data-driven stories to convey data to stakeholders in a way that facilitates understanding, thoughtful ideation of next steps and conveys impact
- Incorporates various styles of graphical elements and representations of data to simplify complex data sets
- Establishes and enforces design standards and practices across all projects to ensure consistency, usability, and a polished look, focusing on details such as fonts, titles, and layout
- Train, develop, and lead staff and student workers as needed
What you need to know:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field, and five (5) or more years of experience in data visualization
- Knowledge of data visualization tools and technologies
- Knowledge of design principles such as layout, typography, color, and interaction design
- Knowledge of reporting tools to gather data (e.g., Tableau or other dashboards)
- Knowledge of visual journalism fostering a changed way of seeing through graphics, changing the way we seek out, consume, and understand data and ideas
- Knowledge of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and key libraries, especially D3
- Fluent skills with Adobe tools such as Illustrator, Excel, and Photoshop
- Expert in Keynote and others to share and co-ideate on assets
- Expert skill with charting and other data visualization techniques
- Ability to transform data into compelling visuals
- Ability to work quickly and efficiently under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Exceptional ability to translate complex business requirements and data sets into simple, actionable insights through visual storytelling
- Ability to work effectively in a distributed team and communicate with internal stakeholders as an independent and strategic thinker
- Ability to lead by example in communicating, participating, and encouraging support of the institution's sustainability programs
