HYBRID ELIGIBILITY
This position works a hybrid schedule, spending time remotely and in the office in Houston, TX. The current hybrid schedule provides flexibility to collaborate in the office Tuesdays through Thursdays and work from home Mondays and Fridays. With our 9/80 feature you get time off every other Friday when you work at least 80 hours over the preceding nine days.
POSITION SUMMARY
Hess is seeking an experienced geologist with reservoir modelling and geological integration expertise to join its Houston-based Gulf of Mexico (GoM) Subsurface production team. The successful candidate will report to the Geoscience Manager for GoM Production and be a key member of a highly skilled, multi-disciplined subsurface team, delivering integrated geologic assessments and geo-models for Hess' producing assets.
ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities include, but not limited to:
- Build and maintain a deep geologic understanding of Hess producing assets in the GoM from first geologic principles.
- Carry out, review and integrate the interpretation of disparate geologic datasets from regional to intra-field scale and condition inputs for reservoir modelling.
- Conduct geological modeling efforts for Hess' US GoM fields
- Create, update and maintain Petrel models for volumetric uncertainty analysis and dynamic simulation.
- Work closely with reservoir engineers early in model builds ensure static models seamlessly enable dynamic simulation.
- Pragmatically apply advanced methods such as ensemble modeling to appropriate assets.
- Inform high quality business decisions through clear communication of geologic concepts, uncertainties and insights from geomodelling work.
- Support corporate Reserves Process through the creation of SEC compliant maps and volumetric estimates.
- Actively collaborate with Reservoir & Production Engineers on production optimization and field development planning.
- Support well operations, as required.
- Effectively communicate results of all work to Hess management and Joint Venture partners to encourage alignment on field development plans.
- Conduct and participate in technical assurance reviews and partner meetings.
- Provide support for special projects, sub-regional interpretation and exploration efforts around producing assets as required.
- Lead, coach, and mentor less experienced staff and drive continuous improvement.
QUALIFICATIONS
Skills & Competencies
- Strong communication, interpersonal and teamworking skills are essential. Able to work effectively in a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural team environment.
- Excellent presentation skills - willingness to share insights and best practices and confident in representing the team and company at internal and external technical and operational meetings.
- Strong geological interpretation skills including seismic interpretation and ability to integrate across multiple disciplines, data types (well log, seismic, core, pressure etc.) and scales (well, field, and basin scales).
- Ability to represent complex geologic interpretations and associated uncertainties effectively in model space.
- Specialist knowledge of building complex reservoir models using Petrel software and associated workflows (essential) including construction and iteration of models with reservoir engineering feedback, advanced structural and property model QC, advanced statistical methods, and application of appropriate workflows, including ensemble modeling.
- Highly competent in turbidite depositional systems, their reservoir architecture and seismic interpretation. Secondary knowledge in salt tectonics and structural geology. GoM experience is beneficial.
- Knowledgeable in petroleum systems and basin analysis with the ability to assess when additional work is needed to better characterize the field and untested zones for additional opportunities.
- Familiar with SEC reserves certification and reporting process.
- Exposure to and understanding of principles of data science is an advantage, including familiarity with big data analytics.
- Free thinker with the ability to find alternatives to conventional methods or new ways of doing work to tackle complex problems.
- Demonstrated ability to work to tight deadlines and effective at multi-tasking.
- Competent mentor, adept at developing junior staff.
Education, Experience & Certifications
- 10+ years of applied petroleum geoscience experience working for an operator across multiple value chains.
- MSc or PhD in Geoscience or related discipline with formal training courses in various development geological disciplines.
- 5+ years of applied geomodeling experience at an operating company.
