Job Summary

Under regular direction and in compliance with standard operating procedures and policies, conducts inspections of commercial properties and assists with permit field inspections and fire investigations. Conducts routine and follow-up inspections to ensure compliance with International Fire Codes. Performs occupancy compliance checks and inspects special event sites. Works special events and performs fire watch duties. Assists in training the public in fire safety and advises public on general and specific fire and life safety matters. Assists in the formation of evacuation and emergency action plans. Assists in conducting fire investigations. Serves for call-in on a rotating basis.



Essential Functions

% of Time

  • Conduct Fire Prevention Inspections of Commercial Properties: Under the supervision of the Deputy Fire Marshal, conduct on-site inspections (i.e., sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, and protection devices and equipment) of commercial properties with responsible party, to ensure the systems are still operating as installed per fire code and all applicable standards. Enter completed inspection notices into Public Safety Record Management System and tracking software to complete and document the inspection. Conduct follow-up and re-inspections for compliance with codes while under the guidance and supervision of the Deputy Fire Marshal. Assists with Fire and Life Safety classes to help educate the public about fire safety and emergency training practices for business, communities and private residences.

  • Assist with Permit Field Inspections: Assist Fire Inspector II in conducting on-site inspections of new and renovated systems that pertain to all applicable fire and life safety systems with contractors. Inspect buildings to locate hazardous conditions and fire code violations such as accumulation of combustible materials, electrical wiring problems, and inadequate or non-functional fire exits. Inspect and test fire protection systems such as fire alarms, sprinklers, and other fire protection equipment to verify that systems are installed in accordance with appropriate laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards. Works with Inspector II to ensure all records have been completed and entered into Public Safety Record Management and tracking software. Perform occupancy compliance checks and inspect special event sites.

  • Assist with Fire Investigations: Respond to fire scenes as needed. Assist in determination of the origin and cause of fire. Interview witnesses, take pictures, draw diagrams, and assist law enforcement with collection of evidence as directed by the senior investigators. Testify in civil and criminal legal proceedings, as required.

Fire Inspector I Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) or more years of experience as a Firefighter II or higher.
  • Required at hire:
    • NFPA FFII meeting IFSAC or ProBoard certifications.
    • Current CPR.
    • NIMS ICS or a NFA course meeting NIMS ICS (100, 200 & 700).
    • SCFA EVDT or equivalent IFSAC/ProBoard certification.
    • Arson Detection for the First Responder or equivalent.
  • Required to obtain within one (1) year of hire:
    • Basic Fire/Arson Investigations (SCFA or NFA).
    • SCFA Fire Marshal Certification.
    • ICC Fire Inspector I.
    • SCFA S.C. Fire Marshal Rules and Regulations.


Fire Inspector II Job Requirements:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Fire Inspector I.
  • NFPA FFII to meet IFSCA or ProBoard certifications.
  • Current CPR. 
  • NIMS ICS or a NFA course meeting NIMS ICS (100, 200 & 700).
  • ICS 300. 
  • Basic Fire/Arson Investigations (SCFA or NFA).
  • SCFA Fire Marshal Certification. 
  • ICC Fire Inspector I.
  • SCFA S.C. Fire Marshal Rules and Regulations.
  • SCFA EVDT or equivalent IFSAC/ProBoard certification.
  • ICC Inspector II Certification or Fire Plans Review Class.

Driver's License Requirements

  • Valid South Carolina Class D Driver's License.


Performance Requirements

Knowledge of:

  • On-site inspection procedures (i.e. sprinkler systems, fire alarm systems, and protection devices and equipment) of commercial properties.
  • Inspection methods of buildings to locate hazardous conditions and fire code violations.
  • Laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards of fire inspection and the testing of fire protection systems.
  • Collection of evidence, witness interviews, taking pictures, drawing diagrams, and other methods for determining the origin and cause of fires.

Ability to:

  • Perform occupancy compliance checks and inspect special event sites.
  • Inspect and test fire protection systems such as fire alarms, sprinklers, and other fire protection equipment to verify that systems are installed in accordance with appropriate laws, codes, ordinances, regulations, and standards.
  • Assist in determination of the origin and cause of fire.
  • Interview witnesses, take pictures, draw diagrams, and assist law enforcement with collection of evidence.
  • Testify in civil and criminal legal proceedings.
  • Inspect buildings to locate hazardous conditions and fire code violations.
  • Assists with Fire and Life Safety classes.
  • Obtain and maintain certifications needed to perform job duties.
  • Read papers, periodicals, journals, manuals, and policies.
  • Make mathematical calculations and draw logical conclusions.
  • Write reports, prepare business letters, summarize meeting minutes, and compose emails in a clear and professional manner.
  • Operate equipment to include vehicle, drills, ladder, hydrant wrench, hydrant gauge, smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detector, pitot gauge, spanner wrench, code books, flashlight, fire extinguisher, two-way radio, evidence containers, camera, and TV. Work with Fire Prevention and Education equipment as needed.
  • Operate general office equipment to include scanner, printer, copier, telephone, and computer with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Utilize specialized software and systems to include timekeeping system, public safety records management system and other associated software. 



Working Conditions

Primary Work Location: Office environment, vehicle, and outside.

Protective Equipment Required: Hard hat, safety glasses, safety boots, respirators, and Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA).

Environmental/Health and Safety Factors:

Occasional exposure to unpleasant environmental conditions and/or hazards. Occasional outside work. Frequent exposure to mechanical hazards, electrical hazards, and fire hazards. Occasional exposure to explosives and communicable diseases. Rare exposure to chemical hazards and physical danger or abuse. Daily exposure to noise and vibration. Monthly exposure to respiratory hazards and physical hazards. Seasonal exposure to extreme temperature and wetness and/or humidity.

Physical Demands:

Continuously requires walking, vision, hearing, twisting, and talking. Frequently requires standing, fine dexterity, sitting, foot controls, and balancing. Occasionally requires lifting, carrying, reaching, kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing, bending, and crouching. Rarely requires crawling. Light strength demands include exerting up to 20 pounds occasionally, 10 pounds frequently, or negligible amounts constantly and/or walking or standing to a significant degree.

Mental Demands:

Frequently requires irregular schedule/overtime, working closely with others as part of a team, tedious or exacting work, and noisy/distracting environment. Occasionally requires time pressures, emergency situations, frequent change of tasks, and performing multiple tasks simultaneously.
