The Director of Theatre Operations reports to the Chair of the Department of Performing Arts and works in collaboration with the Artistic Director of Emerson Stage. The position is responsible for overseeing the operational, financial, and marketing aspects of Emerson Stage while blending those duties with creative strategic leadership in an academic theatre environment. The role involves the management of a complex budget, contract negotiation, marketing, and web/social media. In addition, the director will mentor students working on 8-9 productions annually and provide high-level oversight to production area heads to ensure the safe and effective staffing and supervision of student workers. The position demands independent leadership within a collaborative environment and the ability to find creative solutions to complex problems with internal and external stakeholders.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Supervise the Production Manager, who is responsible for all Emerson Stage production staff.
  • Establish and maintain a healthy, creative environment conducive to meeting or exceeding the high standards of academic excellence required by Emerson College and the Department of Performing Arts, understand and effectively create a working model that properly encourages and supports the role of theater production in Performing Arts.
  • Collaborate with the Department Chair, Artistic Director, and Production Manager to lead production meetings, performances, public events, donor events, and other productions as necessary.
  • Ensure that adequate tools and resources, as well as safety and training, are provided to all EmStage staff, faculty, and students.
  • Encourage, create, identify, and provide professional development opportunities for staff to effectively meet their job objectives.
  • Convene monthly staff meetings to collaborate and strategize on policies and protocols that ensure positive outcomes for all stakeholders.
  • Create and maintain strong working relationships with all staff members, particularly the Production Manager and the Artistic Director of Emerson Stage.
  • Design, execute, and report on all aspects of a marketing and communication plan which includes all matters related to show promotions in print and online, and all communication with internal and external stakeholders, prospective audiences, crew, faculty, and students.
  • Coordinate with the Office of the Arts Box Office on front-of-the-house protocols, including ticketing and comps.
  • Oversee the production manager on production hires, contracted personnel, and services in support of Emerson Stage.
  • Execute payments and logistics for guest artists as outlined in guest artist contracts. This includes but is not limited to campus access, housing, travel, royalty payments, and marketing restrictions.
  • Create and monitor the budget for each EmStage season. This includes regular financial reporting to the chair, dean, and provost.
  • Recruit, hire, supervise, and coordinate student employees and student company managers.
  • Manage and administer the needs of the EmStage office, including supplies and office equipment matters, and serve as a point of contact for all guests and campus visitors with questions and queries.
  • Develop and maintain community partnerships with other theatre organizations, coordinate or represent EmStage at external events, and serve on internal and external.
  • Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned, including producing special events.

QUALIFICATIONS – Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to effectively perform job.

  • BFA, BS or BA degree required, preferably in Arts Management or a theatre-related field. Graduate degree preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional work in a theatre management setting, whether in the commercial, academic, or not-for-profit setting.
  • Minimum 2 years demonstrated experience in both front-of-house and backstage roles in an academic theatre setting.

  • Excellent financial management skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage stressful situations.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of social media platforms, email software, and scheduling platforms
  • Strong MS Office and G Suite skills
  • Proficiency in theatre industry-specific software and the ability to learn new software easily
  • Excellent time management skills with attention to detail and follow-through
  • Self-starter with excellent diplomacy and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated experience with drafting and executing professional artist contracts
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to dynamic circumstances

Compensation: $89,900.00 - $112,500.00 annually, commensurate with experience.

Grade of Position: 23-11E

Scheduled Weekly Hours: 36.25
