Full Job Description
The Director II, Fire Science provides strategic leadership and direct management of the Fire Science program. This position ensures compliance with regulatory and credentialing agency requirements while fostering relationships with regional fire departments to provide educational support and professional training opportunities. The director is responsible for overseeing all program operations, including curriculum development, staff supervision, and maintaining facilities and equipment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Provide direction and oversee the functions of the Fire Science program to ensure that goals and objectives are accomplished in accordance with established priorities, time limitations, and funding limitations. Ensure program compliance with federal, state, and local rules, regulations, and/or grant requirements. Maintain records and prepare reports, monitor the budget and resources, participate in the strategic planning process, and assist with budget activities within program guidelines and insure excellent customer service.
  • Supervise, recruit and orient adjunct faculty. Participate in faculty development activities to update knowledge of the subject area and to remain current in the use of alternative teaching techniques and appropriate instructional technology. Ensure adjuncts possess proper teaching credentials through the AzCFSE.
  • Develop curriculum and prepare class schedules including determining classes that are needed, time offered, number of sections, and assignment of the proper instructor. Ensure courses are scheduled & conducted in accordance with the Arizona Center for Fire Service Excellence (AzCFSE) and other fire science credentialing agencies. Develop course outlines, syllabus, and course materials that promote learning and fulfill the program objective. Maintain students’ records and grades during the term of the course; complete and return required reports to the appropriate office by due dates. Share responsibility for maintaining the facilities and equipment in area used.
  • Maintain up-to-date information of all state and federal guidelines, rules & regulations pertaining to industry standards as published by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and recommend changes as necessary to ensure that the college is complying to all applicable regs & standards.
  • Provide feedback to students regarding personal achievement and academic matters. Meet with students as needed to ensure student success. Assist in the advising of students for enrollment in the Fire Science programs, confirm enrollment of the students in the appropriate classes, place book orders in the bookstore.
  • Check and record all equipment. Buildings, and materials assigned to fire science division for proper function and safety. Develop and maintain tracking systems that help monitor usage and track repair histories.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS
  • This position may perform other duties commensurate with the functions and level of the position to include participating in committee assignments and the recruitment and retention of students.
  • Collaborate and assist CAC marketing staff with development of marketing and promotional literature for distribution such as catalogs, articles, newsletters, brochures, and flyers. Distribute promotional materials to fire departments and other interested agencies. Maintain the colleges FSC division website.



EDUCATION:   Associate degree in Fire Science or Emergency Management or Public Safety Administration, Bachelor's preferred.
 
EXPERIENCE:  Seven (7) years of related experience.

Certifications: 

Current NFPA 1001 Firefighter I & II certified

Current NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor I & II or higher certified

Current Fire Officer I certification OR Executive Fire Officer certification by National Fire Academy

Current Live Fire OR Training Officer Credential by Intl. Society of Fire Service Instructors

Current Incident Safety Officer credential by the Fire Department Safety Officers Association

Completion of NFA Training Program Management course (R0445)

SPECIAL POSITION CONDITIONS:  None

  • Knowledge and skill in the application of AzCFSE and other certifying agencies, College Policies and Procedures, and FSC practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices in administration of fire science educational programs in an institution of higher education to include state, federal, and accrediting associations/institutions. Knowledge and skill in the application of state fire certifying agencies, College policies and procedures. 
  • Knowledge of principles and practices in administration of firefighting educational programs in an institution of higher education to include state, federal, and accrediting associations/institutions.
  • Knowledge of instructional program development, planning, evaluation, and review with the ability to produce new, imaginative, or innovative solutions different from traditional approaches.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with staff, community leaders, faculty, students, and the public. 
  • Skill working in a diverse multi-ethnic, multi-cultural population.
  • Knowledge and skill in operating a variety of multimedia equipment, computer systems, hardware, and relevant software applications. 
  • Skill in dealing with a variety of highly confidential information, records, and sensitive situations in an effective manner.
  • Skill in counseling students on college policies and procedures.

Important Notice: As a condition of employment, all full time Central Arizona College employee’s automatically become members of the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS). This is a pension system that requires mandatory contributions from the employee with a matching contribution from the employer.  The 24-25 fiscal year contribution rate is 12.27%.  Please note this rate is subject to change on a fiscal year basis. Membership to ASRS is a condition of employment and is not optional unless you are at least 65 years of age and meet the opt out eligibility requirements, or are a retiree from ASRS .
