Overview 

Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) is seeking a Deputy Vice President (DVP) of Public Affairs to the lead the strategy and execution of issue advocacy communications on the cost of prescription drugs, including insurer and PBM practices, the 340B program and other related issues. The DVP will be accountable for strategic planning, campaign management, and coordination across PhRMA. 

This is a highly visible, fast-paced position that is both internally and externally facing. Accordingly, the successful candidate should be adaptable, able to reprioritize and shift gears quickly, comfortable in a high-pressure environment and be politically savvy, diplomatic, and responsive. The ability to demonstrate consensus building among internal and external stakeholders, sound decision-making and strong interpersonal skills is essential. 

The DVP will be responsible for: 

  • Providing strategic leadership on PhRMA’s approach to prescription drug cost and coverage on behalf of Public Affairs. 
  • Developing and executing public affairs, communications, media relations and paid media strategies on federal and state advocacy priorities. 
  • Leading the development of impactful messaging and communications materials, including media statements, blog posts, op-eds, letters to the editor, press releases, talking points, social media posts and paid media collateral. 
  • Serving as a media spokesperson and driving proactive and reactive media engagement. 
  • Understanding the legislative, political and advocacy dynamics related to prescription drug costs and coverage.

  • Excellent communication skills (writing, speaking and listening) and passion for conveying complex issues in a simple manner. 
  • Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills.
  • Creative thinker that can shift gears quickly and be comfortable in a high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet short, non-negotiable and competing timelines.

Professional Experience / Requirements 

  • Bachelor’s degree. 
  • Minimum of 10+ years of relevant professional experience, preferably within corporate, government, public relations agency, trade association, advocacy organization or political campaigns.
  • Must be comfortable working for a non-partisan organization.
  • Must be responsive/available after hours and on weekends. 

Potential Salary

$187,100 - $266,700 per annum. Salary is commensurate with experience and other compensable factors.
