As a comprehensive performing arts school set in one of the world's finest public institutions of higher education, the School of Music, Theatre & Dance (SMTD) is deeply engaged in the creation, practice, scholarship, and pedagogy of music, theatre, and dance. Center Stage Strings Counselors are responsible for the orientation and supervision of MPulse students in the residence halls, as well as the planning and implementation of community building activities for MPulse students. Center Stage Strings Counselors will be paid a stipend for their service, artistic opportunities, as well as be provided with room and board throughout their time in MPulse.

Full Time: June 10 - July 12, 2025

Assignment Duration: 5 weeks including a mandatory training week (June 11 - June 14, 2025)

Compensation: $250 per week, plus room, board and artistic opportunities

Reports to: MPulse Camp Director and MPulse Assistant Camp Director 

Responsibilities*

Working with MPulse is a great experience for those who have a passion for mentorship and collaboration with others in the arts. Being a counselor for MPulse is a great way for those interested in education to get experience leading a large group of high school age students. The position allows SMTD students to be surrounded and work with U-M Faculty and Guest Artists throughout the summer and attend performances and workshops with MPulse participants. We structure their schedule so counselors have the freedom to practice and continue their own studies while earning money and living on campus free of charge. 

  • Create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all participants and families.
  • Be an inclusive, supportive, collaborative and solution oriented counselor team member.
  • Act as a mentor and role model for MPulse participants.
  • Maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for participants and staff.
  • Abide by all University of Michigan and Children on Campus policies and procedures, making participants the first priority.
  • Follow all directions given by direct supervisors, which include Camp Director, Assistant Camp Director, MPulse Program Manager, and Engagement & Outreach Director.
  • Abide by the MPulse Counselor Handbook policies and procedures.
  • Direct and proactive supervision of MPulse participants.
  • Execution of evening activities and events as assigned by the Hall Director.
  • Opportunity to observe program instruction.
  • Participation in Welcome and Checkout days.
  • Reside in U-M residence hall at all times unless approved by camp leadership.


Artistic Opportunities & Duties:

  • One hour lesson per week with Center Stage Strings faculty.
  • 2 weeks of chamber music.
  • Immersive practice and artistic growth environment.
  • Opportunity to observe masterclasses, technique classes, and other instruction.

Required Qualifications*

  • Submission of two contrasting string audition pieces sent via email  if selected for an interview.  
  • Current sophomore standing or higher at time of application.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities and cultures.
  • This position involves traveling to various locations across campus for program needs and delivering materials.

Modes of Work

Additional Information

Candidates for this position must be legally authorized to work in the United States.  Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Decision Making Process

This posting will remain open until all positions are filled. Interviews for this position will take place between February-March, 2025 and will be conducted virtually via Zoom.
