Job Summary

Responsible and accountable (operationally and financially) for station operations which includes cleaning, maintenance, and associated functions for MBTA stations, within their jurisdiction. This position is proactively involved with customers, civic and government officials to ensure timely responses to inquiries and suggestions which impact MBTA Stations. Responsible for maintaining the station environment which meets customer expectations. The branch line manager will also inspect bus shelters along the route.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Manage daily activities at stations including all cleaning functions as well as events and issues requiring customer service relations. 
  • Branch line manager will report and document results of inspections.
  • Coordinate activities among other departments, local governments, and civic groups. 
  • Utilize all department/corporate technology including but not limited to Enterprise Asset Management, station inspection application, and life safety systems to successfully complete required tasks.
  • Monitor and perform station inspections, ensuring timely response to deficiencies.  
  • Formulate station maintenance priorities.
  • Follow up with respective departments for corrective actions. 
  • Ensure a safe working environment and adherence to guidelines of company safety policies and procedures.
  • Plan manpower resources for ticketing, customer service and cleaning services. 
  • Assist with diversions and bus programs as it relates to planned or unplanned service disruptions.
  • Maintain positive relationships with station and cleaning personnel and applicable unions.
  • Maintain station records in accordance with the MBTA's policies and procedures.
  • Select, develop, and motivate personnel within the department. 
  • Provide career development for subordinates. 
  • Provide prompt and effective coaching and counseling. 
  • Review direct reports and approve performance appraisals as required.
  • Promote safe work practices and provide safe working conditions. 
  • Create a professional environment that respects individual differences and enables all employees to develop and contribute to their full potential.
  • Participate in outreach efforts, both internal and external, to promote the MBTA to local governments, education facilities, civic groups, and businesses adjacent to MBTA stations. 
  • Monitor expenses and contracts.  
  • Develop technical specifications for service contracts.  
  • Provide input for development of annual operating plan and budget.
  • Must be available to report 24/7 to respond to calls, emails, and texts after working hours as needed.
  • Perform all other duties and projects that may be assigned.

Minimum Requirements & Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Five (5) years of experience working with professional cleaning, equipment or materials inventory, and/or facilities maintenance reporting.
  • One (1) year of recent supervisory/management experience.
  • Experience working in a customer related field.
  • Experience working in a union environment.
  • Through knowledge of how to identify, evaluate and improve internal controls.
  • Experience using all Microsoft applications.
  • Basic knowledge of Accounting, Finance, and Public Relations.
  • Proven above-average ability to be versatile and adaptable to new situations on short notice.
  • Experience with addressing concerns of customers, agencies, other departments, and employees.  

Substitutions Include

  • A High School Diploma, GED, or an Associate's degree from an accredited institution, with an additional two (2) years of directly related experience substitutes for the Bachelor's degree requirement. 
  • A Master's degree in a related subject substitutes for three (3) years of general experience. 
  • A nationally recognized certification, or statewide/professional certification in a related field substitutes for one (1) year of experience 

Preferred Experience and Skills
  • Experience in the transportation industry.
  • Experience building positive relationships between MBTA and local governments.
  • Knowledge of operating budget policy and procedures.
  • Knowledge of OSHA standards and applications.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of MBTA Union Agreements and related Arbitration Awards.

Job Conditions:

  • Ability to effectively read, comprehend, communicate, and respond to instructions, orders, signs, notices, inquiries, etc. in English.
  • Ability to commute to assigned work locations in the Boston, MA metro area, as required by the role.
  • Ability to provide internal and external customers with courteous and professional experiences.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and as part of a team (or supervise, if required).
  • Ability to uphold the rights and interests of the MBTA while building and maintaining effective relationships with employees and co-workers.
  • Ability to adhere to rules, regulations, collective bargaining agreements (if applicable), and policies of the MBTA, including the EEO, anti-discrimination, anti-harassment, and anti-retaliation policies.
  • Have a satisfactory work record for the two (2) years immediately prior to the closing date of this posting (unless if current student or recent graduate), including overall employment, job performance, discipline, and safety records (infractions and/or offenses occurring after the closing of the posting and before the filling of a vacancy may preclude a candidate from consideration for selection).
  • Ability to pass a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check, comprehensive background screening, and / or medical Clinic screening, potentially including a physical examination and drug and alcohol screenings.
  • Ability to work all shifts and / or locations assigned, directed, or necessary for this position, including (for some transit / operations roles) up to twenty-four (24) hours per day, seven (7) days per week as necessary to accommodate severe weather conditions, emergencies, or any other circumstances that may potentially impact service or the safety of service.
  • Intern / co-op staff must be enrolled full or part-time in an accredited educational program and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 for the entire duration of the internship / co-op.
